DRESS: an exhibition by Suzanne Wright
Artist's Reception April 14, 5-8pm (Art’s Night Out)
“Dress” is a mixed-media exhibit of prints, paintings, and sculptures by artist Suzanne Wright, curated by her daughter (Aidan Wright). “Dress” explores themes of nostalgia, motherhood, self-expression, and the many different forms that womanhood can take. Comprised largely of series of prints of women’s and children’s dresses that have been inked and run through a press, this exhibit explores the intersection of art, fashion, history, and humor. Interspersed with everyday objects, toys, and exquisite corpse sculptures, Wright’s work juxtaposes child-like frivolity to the sincerity of adult clothing and the regimented act of printmaking. Through these concepts, she asks the viewer to consider their own relationship to clothing and memory.
Suzanne Wright lives and creates in Vermont, where she happily retired after teaching drawing, painting, and printmaking to high-schoolers for over 30 years in Pennsylvania. She spends her time making, exploring, traveling, and visiting her daughter in Northampton, MA. She received a BS from Pennsylvania State University, and a Master’s in Art Education from Tyler School of Art at Temple University. She has shown in various galleries across New England, including in a recent 4-person show at the Southern Vermont Art Center titled “DWELL”, and a 2004 show at A.P.E. Gallery titled “Year of the Rabbit”.
