ARC.19, activate, research, create, 2019, is A.P.E.'s fourth season of summer projects. ARC continues to expand the understanding of a contemporary art gallery as an active space within the community. From May 28 - August 31,2019, A.P.E. will host four distinct projects that include performance, mixed media installation, and workshops about creative practice. During each residency, artists will create and shape work in the gallery space, which will be open to the public through a variety of events and interactive moments. Each project maintains a central inquiry into the relationship between the public, the work, and the space in which it is made.

Daily Practice/Daily Drawings
Lynn PeterfreundMay 28 - June 2
Lynn Peterfreund is showing 600 selected daily drawings she drew from 2012 through the present. She officially began making daily drawings in 2012 with her morning tea cup as the subject accompanied by notes about the day, observations, feelings, to do lists. In 2013, the theme was trees and since 2014, she’s been drawing people: her relatives, friends, students, teachers, colleagues, public figures, and herself. The drawings as a group present an unstructured memoire, stories with recurring characters, thoughts and feelings about things ranging from dinner to death. Her materials, watercolor pencils, pens and watercolors, are used in a variety of styles with some drawings done quickly and others more finished.
As artist in residence, Lynn will be working on a series of drawing books. She and her guests will be conducting workshops daily that offer basic art making skills and creative prompts, as well as workshops in movement, writing and other practices. Tables in the gallery will be set up with materials for visitors to make collages, draw, write, read other graphic memoires as part of the theme of what it might mean to have daily practice. Anyone can come in and participate, read, or just sit in the space.
Shaina Cantino
July 7 – 21 Shaina Cantino will be developing and documenting an evening-length contemporary dance theater piece in collaboration with performer LeahFournier and dramaturg/designer Rose Proctor. The performance, inspired by Cantino's relationship with her recently deceased grandmother, grapples with various levels of intimacy in the dying process. The movement and text explores the tug between rigidity and expansion in aging and letting go.
Performances will be held at July 18 - 20 at 8pm. Tickets: $12 with some flexibility in price available.
Cantino received a New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) Dance Fund Grant for the development of this piece.
Security in a State of ViolenceEli Liebman + othersJuly 28 - August 11 A mixed media exhibition focused on the phenomena and relationship of security and violence and exploring how they are articulated in varied forms ranging human touch to dragnet surveillance; from the built environment to notions of health. The show will be comprised of woodblock prints, animation, sewn blankets, postcards, sound, and sculpture. |

10-year anniversary installation for Tristatic that centers around performance for video work, video stills, costumes and accessories, interactive elements for visitors to generate their own material, a zine/exhibition catalog and an artist conversation.
