Students in the two first grade classrooms at the
Smith College Campus School will exhibit their artwork and poetry created from
an in-depth study of individuals who have worked towards social change through
non-violent efforts. Whether they were listening to stories of Barack
Obama, Martin Luther King, or Eleanor Roosevelt, students were captivated by
the idea of change in our world. Using picture books to learn about
various individuals who worked non-violently for change in the United States,
they then chose their favorite “Great Changer” and created artwork to represent
that person.
Having forged a bond through picture
book story and artwork with their Great Changer’s life, students were then
provided with the opportunity to share what they had learned about their Great
Changers through poetry. Students used powerful words to grab their
readers’ attention, as well as exercised their writer’s voice to highlight
their Great Changer’s inspiring story.
