CARL CAIVANO

RECENT WORK by Carl Caivano.
An exploration of painting in the third dimension
March 6 to April 1, 2009
These artworks are mixed-media dimensional wall and ceiling hung constructions by Carl Caivano that explore painting in the third dimension. Paint strokes turn, interweave, and extend into space in a dance-like manner. He combines vines, tubes, plywood, canvas, aluminum and paint improvisationally to create the illusion of painting freed from the canvas. Formal issues are dealt with in an intuitive manner that pays homage to the Modernist traditions of action painting, Pop Art, and constructivism. Caivanos’ fluid combinations of color, form, symbol and shape release the sense of tension between the illusion of painted dimension and the reality of sculptural construct. His aim is to combine formalist and symbolic imagery to invoke the same visceral, emotional, and spiritual response that music and dance create in the viewer.
Carl Caivano is a Visiting Lecturer at Smith College where he teaches Design and Drawing in the Art Department. His work is in numerous public and private collections.
