IN THE SKIN OF THE OTHER

Nancy Winship Milliken has a solo show at the A.P.E. Gallery running from September 11 to October 10, 2009.  The public opening will be on Friday, September 11, 2009, 6:00-8:00pm. There will be an artist talk on Arts Night Out:  Friday October 9, 2009, 6:00pm.

For her freestanding and relief sculptures Milliken uses raw materials gathered from New England and New York farms near her rural Western Mass studio. She stretches, burns, freezes and manipulates the different characteristics and warm colors of ancient mediums in nontraditional ways. Milliken keeps the texture and hay of fleece as it was on the sheep, llama, or even family dog as she needle or “wet felts” the material into gestural forms. Some forms have a layer of collagen over the wool, creating a translucent “skin” of texture.  “The materials ground me as I work with the different characteristics and natural colors of these unusual mediums.  The softness of warmed beeswax, the oiliness of wool, even the slippery nature of sheep intestines keeps me very present as I work out conceptual issues of the beginning and end of life” says Milliken. “My recent work plays with the structure of the grid relating to both the ceiling grid and the window at A.P.E.”
