A group of notorious collagers present "MAG HAGS" at A.P.E.
Gallery. These collage pieces are
all hand-done, revisiting the old tradition—pre-Photoshop, post National
Geographic. Co- curated by
Jono Tosch and Rachel B. Glaser, MAG HAGS will showcase collage work from a
range of artists. The curators
focused on work that upholds and pushes the definition of traditional collage,
highlighting its underlying principles: scrappiness, reuse, frugality, re-organization,
wit, and invention.
Collage is heroic because it reclaims. It recycles the products of corporation and business, it
messes up the organized and planned.
In a time fueled by digital appropriation, MAG HAGS presents the new
artworks made with old papers and glue. As collage bad boy, Frank Sidebolt said,
“You can go ahead and ram a couple images together with your computer and call
it collage. I will be out back
gluing your soul to the fence.”
